Recently, the 26th medical team aiding Senegal successfully treated a 24-year-old local youth named Joseph who was on the verge of death due to severe empyema. This action vividly demonstrated the spirit of the Chinese medical aid teams, which is characterized by fearlessness in the face of hardship, willingness to contribute, saving lives and healing the wounded, and boundless love. It also wrote a new chapter in the friendship between China and Africa.
Joseph sought medical help at a local hospital after experiencing persistent weakness and fever for over a month, along with sudden breathing difficulties. Upon examination, doctors found a large accumulation of fluid in his right chest cavity, with a blood oxygen saturation below 80% a sign of life-threatening distress. The attending physician, Dr. Dauda, immediately sought the expertise of the Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone.
Deputy Chief Physician Xia Hongxing from Nanhua Hospital of Nanhua University responded without delay. After examining the patient, he discovered severely diminished breath sounds in the right lung and unstable vital signs. With support from Deputy Chief Physician Peng Liming of Xiangya Hospital and Dr. Jiang Zheming, an ultrasound specialist from Hunan Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Dr. Xia performed an urgent thoracentesis, draining approximately 500 milliliters of thick yellow pus. Joseph’s breathing eased immediately, marking the first step toward recovery.

When Dr. Xia reported the case to team leader Liu Longfei, the Chinese medical experts held an emergency consultation and diagnosed Joseph with right-sided empyema and sepsis. Facing limited local medical resources, a lack of advanced diagnostic tools, an inability to perform thoracotomy, and the patient’s financial constraints, the team made a crucial decision: they donated their own scarce supply of the life-saving antibiotic Meropenem.
In a setting plagued by frequent water and power outages, and despite the risks of infection, Dr. Xia and Dr. Peng repeatedly drained and flushed the pus cavity using only the dim beam of a flashlight. Their determination ensured that the drainage was as thorough as possible under the circumstances.

“This is a young patient with severe empyema and sepsis who was in critical condition,” one of the attending Chinese doctors explained.
“After we performed thoracentesis and administered the highest-level antibiotic treatment, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital. As a member of the Chinese Medical Team aiding Sierra Leone, I hope to use my medical skills to help more Sierra Leonean people and assist more local doctors in improving their diagnosis and treatment capabilities.”
After nearly two weeks of meticulous treatment and compassionate care, Joseph’s health improved dramatically. His breathing stabilized, his blood oxygen rose to above 95%, and follow-up imaging showed the infection gradually resolving. From being bedridden and fragile, he regained mobility and his smile.
Before leaving the hospital, Joseph and his family posed for a photo with the Chinese and Sierra Leonean medical staff. With deep emotion, they said:
“We are very grateful for the help of the Chinese doctors, who saved my brother’s life. We will never forget this kindness.”
