Sierra Leone has reached another significant milestone in strengthening its healthcare system with the successful completion of the second national training course on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) techniques. This collaborative initiative, led by the Chinese Medical Team in Sierra Leone in conjunction with local institutions, continues to expand national capacity in alternative healthcare practices while reinforcing the growing partnership between Sierra Leone and China.
The training, held at the Pingkang Medical Clinic and Stomatological University, brought together medical professionals, trainees, and regulatory bodies to deepen their understanding of TCM and enhance its application in community healthcare. The program demonstrated how TCM can provide effective, low-cost treatment options that support healing, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to preventive healthcare across the country.
The course was jointly taught by experienced TCM experts Guo Jianjun, Liu Chunlei, and Sheng Xi, who provided systematic explanations alongside hands-on practical training in appropriate techniques such as acupuncture and moxibustion for emergency treatment, pediatric massage, and gua sha. The course content was carefully designed to align with the diagnosis and treatment needs of common and frequently occurring diseases in Sierra Leone, while interactive discussions further deepened participants’ understanding of core TCM concepts and methods.

In addition, nursing expert Hong Yuan delivered specialized instruction informed by the characteristics of infectious diseases prevalent in Sierra Leone. Her sessions focused on key aspects of malaria care, significantly strengthening the trainees’ clinical care capabilities and reinforcing the relevance of TCM within the country’s broader healthcare response.
Reflecting on the impact of the initiative, Dr. Liu Longfei, Team Leader of the Chinese Medical Team in Sierra Leone, emphasized the value TCM brings to local communities.
“Traditional Chinese Medicine continues to prove its value in Sierra Leone by improving community health, saving lives, and offering sustainable treatment methods. Our collaboration reflects a lasting friendship built on shared purpose and mutual respect,” he said.
Dr. David Idriss Kamara, Principal of the Pingkang Medical Clinic, expressed deep appreciation for the ongoing support provided by Chinese medical experts and highlighted the institution’s progress in building local capacity.
“Our institution has trained over 60 dental therapists, and the demand for quality training continues to grow. We are grateful for the support from the Chinese doctors and urgently appeal for expanded government assistance to accommodate more students,” Dr. Kamara stated.
Santigie Samuel Sesay, from the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone, underscored the critical importance of the training programs offered by Pingkang Stomatological University, particularly at a time when the country faces a severe shortage of dental professionals.
“Pingkang Stomatological University is making a real difference by training Sierra Leonean professionals during a time of critical need. Strengthening such partnerships is essential to building the healthcare workforce our nation requires,” he affirmed.
From the education regulatory sector, Madam Nadia Parkinson of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) commended the institution for its growing role in national development. She emphasized that Pingkang Dental College remains fully compliant with national standards and continues to strengthen the country’s education system.
“We appreciate Pingkang Dental College for its significant contribution to Sierra Leone’s education sector. Their commitment to training dental therapists supports national development, and we encourage continued partnership with their Chinese counterparts,” she remarked.
The completion of the second national TCM training course stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation in enhancing healthcare delivery. With renewed support, expanded training opportunities, and strengthened partnerships, Sierra Leone is steadily building a health system that is more inclusive, skilled, and capable of serving its people effectively.
