Fulah leaders from 34 countries have chosen a Sierra Leonean as their highest-ranking leader, and Sierra Leone’s government has welcomed him home.
Tabital Pulaaku International, the global organisation uniting Fulah communities across the world, has elected Alhaji Amadu Juldeh Sowe, a Sierra Leonean, as its new president, known in the Fulah tradition as the Horeejo. The election took place in The Gambia on the 27th September 2026. It marks a historic moment for Sierra Leone and for the wider Fulah world.
Following his election, Alhaji Juldeh Sowe made a courtesy call on Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio. He was accompanied by senior representatives of the organisation, including Alhaji Sidie Dem and Dr Abubakar Gerei. They formally presented the newly crowned Horeejo to the President and the people of Sierra Leone.
Dr Helena Sahid, a senior member of Tabital Pulaaku International from Guinea-Bissau, said the delegation had travelled to Sierra Leone to hand over the new leader to President Bio, the Fulah community and the nation. She described his election as a reflection of the confidence, unity, peace and respect he enjoys among Fulahs across the 34 countries.
Dr Sahid also thanked President Bio for his support of the Fulah community in Sierra Leone. She noted that the election of a Sierra Leonean to the organisation’s top office during President Bio’s tenure shows the country’s supportive environment and the confidence placed in its leadership.
Welcoming the delegation, President Bio praised the Fulah community’s record in Sierra Leone. “You have demonstrated for far too long that you are peaceful and that you have been contributing meaningfully to our country,” he said.

He said his extensive engagement with the community had consistently shown their commitment to peace and national development. He added that he believed Alhaji Juldeh Sowe’s leadership would take Tabital Pulaaku International “to another level.”
The President urged the new Horeejo to use his position to bring the wider Fulah community together and to make unity, peace and successful leadership the hallmarks of his tenure. He thanked the global Fulah community for placing its trust in a Sierra Leonean, and called on Fulahs in Sierra Leone to support him as he takes on his global responsibilities.
In his own address, Alhaji Juldeh Sowe thanked the Government of Sierra Leone for its support. He said he is open to peace and reconciliation within the Pulaaku community, and called on all Fulahs to be ambassadors of peace.
He also spoke about his giving record. According to him, “for the past 20 years he has given more than $500,000 every year to the Pulaaku community in Sierra Leone. He said he owns more than 30 houses where people live rent-free and has sponsored the education of thousands of students”.
For Sierra Leone, the election of one of its own to lead a community spanning around the globe is a point of national pride and a sign of the country’s standing.
