A shooting incident near the ballroom of the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner prompted panic and a rapid security response late Saturday, forcing the high-profile event to be cut short.
According to The Guardian, gunfire erupted near a security screening area at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the dinner was being held. The disturbance triggered an immediate lockdown and evacuation procedures as U.S. Secret Service agents moved to secure the venue and protect attendees.

Reports from Axios indicate that the suspected gunman approached a controlled access point before being confronted by law enforcement. The individual was shot by responding officers and taken into custody. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or motive.
The United States Secret Service confirmed it is actively investigating what it described as a shooting near the event’s main entrance. In a brief statement, officials said all protected individuals were safe and accounted for.
Inside the ballroom, confusion and fear spread quickly as attendees reacted to the sound of gunfire. According to Vanity Fair, security personnel entered the room and directed guests to take cover while the situation was assessed.
Additional reporting from The Washington Post noted that at least one law enforcement officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the response. No fatalities have been officially confirmed.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an annual gathering of journalists, public officials, and guests, was ultimately halted following the incident. Organizers have not announced whether the event will be rescheduled.

Investigators continue to examine how the suspect was able to approach the secured area and whether there were any lapses in screening procedures. Further updates are expected as authorities release more details.
