On the edge of the virgin forests of Rokel Village, Port Loko District, a unique “treasure hunt” is underway. Zhou Shengqiang and Li Duandan, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) experts from the 27th Chinese Medical Team (Hunan), have ventured deep into the wilderness to launch the “New Era Shennong Tasting Hundreds of Herbs” initiative. This journey is more than an exploration of medicinal flora; it is a profound resonance of ancient Chinese medical wisdom echoing across the African landscape.

A 30-Minute “Herbal Dialogue”
Guided by local chiefs and village elders, the medical experts immersed themselves in the dense jungle. Remarkably, within just 30 minutes, they identified and collected nearly ten species of natural plants with significant medicinal value.
“Our people have used this bark to treat headaches for generations,” explained an elder dressed in traditional attire, pointing toward an ancient tree with rough, thorn-like protrusions on its trunk.

Expert Zhou Shengqiang leaned in to observe the texture of the bark where it had been cut, meticulously recording the local application methods. “The local residents possess a wealth of practical experience in utilizing medicinal plants from nature,” Zhou noted. “While they may lack a formal theoretical framework, the efficacy of these plants—such as clearing heat, dispelling dampness, and relieving pain—aligns remarkably well with the core principles of TCM.”
Empowering African Herbs with “Chinese Wisdom”
Throughout the expedition, the medical team acted not only as collectors but also as “decoders.” For every plant discovered, the experts applied the TCM theory of “Four Natures and Five Flavors” to categorize its medicinal properties and meridian tropism.

From the practice of crushing leaves for external application to treat snakebites to decocting herbs for malaria relief, the Chinese experts used systematic TCM theory to re-examine these ancient folk remedies. This cross-border dialogue transformed the mysterious forest into a living classroom, drawing crowds of curious villagers who gathered to observe and learn.
Traditional Medicine as a Bond of Friendship
The “New Era Shennong Tasting Hundreds of Herbs” initiative represents more than just the global outreach of TCM; it is a milestone in the cultural exchange between China and Sierra Leone.
According to Zhou Shengqiang, the medical team plans to further systematize the local medicinal resources during their tenure. They aim to integrate suitable TCM techniques with indigenous African herbal medicine. Through the “Shennong” initiative, the team hopes to do more than just provide immediate healthcare; they seek to contribute “Chinese solutions” toward building a China-Africa community of health and improving the long-term medical standards of the local population.
