Freetown, Sierra Leone – The 26th Batch of the China Medical Team in Sierra Leone has commissioned a state-of-the-art Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Freetown, aimed at improving the treatment and management of coronary heart disease in the country.
According to the team, the establishment of the CCU will enhance the success rate of c cardiovascular heart disease rescue, save more lives, and advance the development of local cardiovascular care and overall emergency medical response.
Speaking at the event, Tao Xueyong, the Director of the Hunan Provincial Disease Control and Prevention Administration, commended the partnership and called for the sustainability of the facility.
“I encourage our Sierra Leonean colleagues to cherish this hard-earned platform, to maintain and manage the facilities and equipment with care, and to actively learn from Chinese experts so that this achievement can continue to benefit the people of Sierra Leone for many years,” the Director said.




He added that the Hunan Provincial Health Commission will continue to provide strong support to China’s foreign medical assistance mission.
“We believe that, with the joint efforts and dedication of both sides, this new flower of China-Sierra Leone health cooperation will bloom even more brilliantly, adding a vibrant note to the shared vision of building a closer China-Africa community with a shared future.”
Dr. Charles Senessie, Deputy Minister of Health I, expressed appreciation to the Chinese government and the hospital’s leadership for their continued support of Sierra Leone’s health sector.
“We want to appreciate the Chinese people; we want to appreciate the leadership of this hospital, because your vision aligns very well with the vision of the entire country. We are really happy that you are able to launch this intensive care unit, which is going to change lives. I’m sure the training that is going to occur here will be one of the best social legacies you leave behind for our future generation,” Dr. Senessie said.
Also speaking, Dr. Augustine Alusine Dauda Tarawallie, Medical Superintendent of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital, described the facility as a major milestone in the nation’s healthcare system.
“It’s indeed a milestone in the healthcare services of Sierra Leone. The establishment of the cardiac intensive care unit came at the right time, because we no longer need to transfer patients in cardiac emergencies to other facilities,” Dr. Tarawallie said.
“This facility will now serve as a referral center, receiving cardiac patients and emergencies from across the country.”
