In a dramatic twist that’s shaking up the American political landscape, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party-the America Party-following a very public and bitter fallout with President Donald Trump.
The announcement came on July 5th via Musk’s social media platform, X, just one day after Trump signed his controversial “Big Beautiful Bill” into law. The legislation, which includes sweeping tax cuts for the wealthy and deep cuts to welfare programs like Medicaid, drew sharp criticism from Musk, who called it “utterly insane and destructive”.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X.
Until recently, Musk was one of Trump’s most prominent supporters-donating hundreds of millions to his campaign and even serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But the alliance unraveled after Musk’s vocal opposition to the new bill, which he claims will balloon the national deficit by over $3 trillion.
Trump didn’t take the criticism lightly. In a retaliatory move, he threatened to revoke federal subsidies from Musk’s companies and even floated the idea of deporting him, despite Musk having held U.S. citizenship since 2002.
What Is the America Party?
Musk says the America Party is a response to what he calls a “uniparty system” dominated by waste and corruption. While the party has yet to be formally registered with the Federal Election Commission, Musk has outlined a focused strategy: target two or three Senate seats and eight to ten House districts in swing states to tip the balance of power in Congress.
He hasn’t named a leader or candidate yet, Musk himself is ineligible to run for president due to his South African birth-but he’s made it clear that the party’s mission is to “give you back your freedom.”
Third parties in the U.S. have historically struggled to gain traction, but Musk’s immense financial resources and social media reach could give the America Party a fighting chance. Analysts remain skeptical, but with over 1.2 million people voting in favor of the party’s creation in Musk’s online poll, the appetite for disruption is undeniable.
