World leaders are set to gather in Kananaskis, Alberta, for the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit from June 15 to 17, as host country Canada unveils an ambitious agenda focused on global security, economic transformation, and international cooperation.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who assumed office earlier this year, announced the key priorities that will shape Canada’s leadership of the summit. Carney called for decisive, coordinated action among G7 nations in the face of intensifying global challenges ranging from geopolitical instability and climate-related disasters to technological disruption and economic uncertainty.
“Canada has what the world wants and the values to which others aspire,” Carney said in a statement. “The G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis is a moment for Canada to work with reliable partners to meet challenges with unity, purpose, and force. Canada is ready to lead.”
Canada’s G7 presidency comes as conflict in Ukraine continues to strain the global order, foreign interference undermines democratic systems, and transnational crime increasingly threatens international stability. At the same time, record wildfires and the ongoing climate crisis have forced governments to rethink emergency response and long-term resilience strategies.
Carney’s three-pronged agenda for the summit reflects those shifting priorities:
- Strengthening Security: Canada will push for collective efforts to combat foreign interference, transnational crime, and escalating environmental emergencies, particularly wildfires that have intensified across the globe.
- Driving Energy and Digital Transition: With a focus on securing supply chains for critical minerals, Canada hopes to accelerate global adoption of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies to fuel economic growth and reduce reliance on unstable energy sources.
- Forging Future Partnerships: The summit will seek to mobilize private investment toward building infrastructure, creating high-paying jobs, and unlocking access to competitive markets, especially through cooperation with trusted international partners.
While the official agenda focuses on G7 priorities, the summit will also feature broader discussions on a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, as well as strategic outreach to partners beyond the G7 bloc signalling an awareness that today’s challenges require global coalitions rooted in shared values.
The situation in the Middle East is also expected to be part of the discussion. In recent days, Israel has intensified its strikes against Iranian military infrastructure, triggering regional concern and international debate. While the G7 nations have historically been aligned on many foreign policy issues, divergent views on how to respond to Israeli military actions and the broader Iran question are likely to surface during closed-door discussions. Diplomats from several countries have already hinted at behind-the-scenes negotiations to issue a unified statement that balances condemnation of violence with calls for de-escalation.
