The stage is set for the 2025 Stanley Cup Final as the Edmonton Oilers prepare to face off against the Florida Panthers in Game 1 tonight at Rogers Place. The Oilers are looking to avenge last year’s heartbreaking loss to the Panthers, who won the series in seven games after coming back from a 3-0 deficit. “All of our energy is going into beating the Florida Panthers,” Connor McDavid.

Connor McDavid, the Oilers’ captain and one of the league’s most dominant players, is determined to lead his team to victory. McDavid has been on a mission to bring the Cup to Edmonton, and he’s drawing inspiration from Sidney Crosby’s 2009 Stanley Cup win with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“I think as a kid growing up, you have such an appreciation for seeing teams that win and seeing the Cup brought out,” McDavid said in a pre-series press conference. Seeing Sid win after growing up and being a Sid fan was pretty cool to see. There are steps to everything, and when you’re a kid, you want to just play in the NHL. You want to be successful and do all these great things, and there comes a point where it’s only about winning. I think this group reached that point years ago, and we’ve been on the cusp ever since. It’s been a few years here with this corps, and we’re looking to finish the job.”
The Oilers have had some injury concerns heading into the series, losing Zach Hyman for the postseason. However, Mattias Ekholm’s return has boosted the team’s health, and coach Kris Knoblauch is confident that his team is ready to take on the Panthers.

“Do we feel we’re a bit stronger, a little more confident? Yeah, maybe,” Knoblauch said. “But we also know the other team’s probably stronger than they were last year, as well. So we’re going to have to play our best to give ourselves an opportunity.”
One of the biggest questions heading into the series was the status of Connor Brown, who suffered an upper-body injury in the Western Conference final. However, Knoblauch confirmed that Brown will be available for Game 1, and the Oilers are expecting big things from their top line.
The Panthers, meanwhile, are known for their aggressive and physical play. They’ve been led by stars like Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov, who have been dominant forces on the ice. The Panthers’ goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky, has been stellar in the net, and the Oilers will need to bring their A-game to score against him.
The goalie battle between Stuart Skinner and Bobrovsky will be a key factor in the series. Skinner has been solid in goal for the Oilers, posting a .944 save percentage in seven playoff games. Bobrovsky, meanwhile, has been nearly unbeatable, with a .932 save percentage in the postseason.
As the puck drops tonight, the Oilers will be looking to take the first step towards bringing the Stanley Cup to Edmonton. With McDavid leading the charge, the Oilers are confident that they can take down the Panthers and bring home the championship.

“All of our energy is going into beating the Florida Panthers,” McDavid said. “There should be nothing else on anyone’s mind. I think there’s familiarity there. We know what to expect from their game. I think they know what to expect from ours. They’re an aggressive, in-your-face and quick team.”
The series promises to be intense, with both teams evenly matched and hungry for the Cup. Will the Oilers finally bring home the championship, or will the Panthers repeat as champs? The anticipation is high, and fans are in for a treat.
The last time a Canadian team lifted the Stanley Cup was in 1993, when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings in five games. This year, hopes were high as five Canadian teams, Edmonton, Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Montreal, made the playoffs. But one after another, they were eliminated. Toronto fell in the first round, Winnipeg couldn’t build on a stellar regular season, and Ottawa and Montreal exited early. In the end, only the Oilers were left carrying Canada’s Stanley Cup hopes.

Game 1 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers gets underway tonight at 6pm MT at Rogers Place.
