The Chinese Embassy in Freetown celebrated academic brilliance and the enduring bond between China and Sierra Leone during the 2024 China Ambassador Scholarship and Grant Award Ceremony. A total of 174 Sierra Leonean students and school pupils were honored for their outstanding academic achievements and unwavering commitment to education.
The annual event, a cornerstone of the China-Sierra Leone partnership, underscores the transformative power of education in driving national development. Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, delivered an inspiring keynote address, emphasizing the critical role of education in shaping Sierra Leone’s future. He commended the awardees for their exceptional performance and discipline, highlighting the rigorous selection process as a testament to their academic prowess and potential to impact their communities positively.

This year’s awards saw 144 students receive the Ambassador Grant, while 30 distinguished recipients earned the prestigious Ambassador Scholarship. These initiatives aim not only to celebrate academic excellence but also to support Sierra Leonean youth in pursuing their educational aspirations, equipping them to achieve their dreams.
Ambassador Wang acknowledged the progress of Sierra Leone’s Free Quality Education program, noting that 189 Sierra Leonean students enrolled in Chinese universities in 2024 alone. He also shared that over 720 Sierra Leoneans participated in training programs and seminars in China this year, covering diverse fields such as agriculture, fisheries, small and medium enterprises, and sports. Looking toward 2026, he reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening educational and cultural ties with Africa, designating it a milestone year for people-to-people cooperation.
Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education, praised the scholarships as a strategic investment in Sierra Leone’s youth. She encouraged the recipients to use their education to drive transformative change in their communities and serve as role models for excellence and leadership. Similarly, Conrad Sackey, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, underscored the vital role of education in fostering socio-economic progress and urged the awardees to embrace their role in nation-building.

As the ceremony concluded, optimism and determination radiated among the attendees. The awardees pledged to use their newfound opportunities to contribute meaningfully to Sierra Leone’s development.
