The Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown, became a focal point for Sierra Leone’s sustainability goals this weekend, as it hosted the 2nd National Climate Resilience and Energy Transition Dialogue. Organized by the Presidential Initiative for Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF), the event gathered policymakers, stakeholders, and experts dedicated to building a resilient, sustainable future.
President Dr. Julius Maada Bio set the stage with a keynote speech highlighting the urgent need to transition to a green economy. He unveiled the new Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan, designed to transform vital sectors such as energy, agriculture, transport, and mining. The plan outlines cost-effective strategies to meet Sierra Leone’s future energy needs and reduce environmental impact.

The dialogue centered on four key themes:
1. Green Industrialization – Participants discussed ways to support small and medium enterprises in adopting clean technologies, aiming to reduce environmental impact and foster climate adaptation.
2. Energy Transition and Access – Strategies for improving energy access and utilizing critical minerals for a sustainable energy infrastructure were explored.
3. Climate Resilient Food Systems – The dialogue emphasized building food systems that can withstand climate impacts, ensuring food security.
4. Gender Empowerment in Energy Transition – Recognizing the role of women in sustainable development, the event stressed inclusivity in the transition to a green economy.
The 2nd National Climate Resilience and Energy Transition Dialogue underscored Sierra Leone’s commitment to confronting climate challenges through collaborative action. As the nation moves forward with its Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan, insights and alliances forged during this dialogue will play a pivotal role in realizing a resilient, sustainable future for all.
